LIVING IN THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN
Life becomes much harder when we are suffering the consequences of sin. These sins can affect us and all of those who live after us. A pattern is formed and it must be broken. This becomes a challenge to every generation.
If I had been in King David’s shoes after his affair with Bathsheba, I would have felt constantly haunted by those words in 2 Samuel 12:11, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your wives in broad daylight.
Even worse, there was that part from 2 Samuel 12:9-12 which reads, “Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’”
David knew that God never lied. If He had pronounced something significant, it would surely come to pass. Of course, we all know the commandments. We all know that sins have consequences, but this statement from YHVH really brings the message home.
MEASURE-FOR-MEASURE
As Nathan’s parable proved out to us, how would you like to be treated the way you have treated others? I’m sure David finally got the message. Further lessons will explore the consequences of sins committed by King David.
Yes, David repented. We will discuss that further. However, Messiah had not yet come to live among men. In those days the penalty for sins was a method or standard called “measure-for-measure.” We find the use of this concept in many biblical passages. In plain English, this means what you dole out to others will be measured back to you. This is the shorter version of what we now call “The Golden Rule.” The same respect David had shown to Uriah The Hittite was about to turn upon him. We once discussed this method in another lesson about a younger David, https://theinseasonlifestyle.com/conquering-jerusalem/. It is a lesson worthy of considering twice.
THE GOLDEN RULE
This measure-for-measure, golden rule seems to be a law YHVH set into the structure of the universe. That means only YHVH has the ability to change its direction. Usually, He leaves it alone. Perhaps that is because He put this method into the creation for a reason. It is about the delicate balance between justice and mercy.
GENERATIONAL CURSES
Some would call this judgement a generational curse upon David’s household. If you are unfamiliar with the term “generational cures” you might want to check this link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hM2VxEVO05A. It will tell you exactly what stops a generational curse. In David’s case, the person who stopped the curse of the sword over David’s household was Yeshua Messiah. He not only broke the curse, but He reversed it. His mouth became the sword producing just the opposite effect of David’s sword. I feel sure David might have lost a lot of sleep pondering these words which were hanging over the head of his household night and day. The beginning of removing the generational curses we bring upon ourselves is simply to confess and turn.
PRAYER OF PSALM 51
David’s confessions and pleas to God are revealed in Psalms 51.
PSALM 51
(Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God, For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. When Nathan the prophet came to him after his adultery with Bathsheba.)
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your loving devotion; according to Your great compassion, blot out my transgressions. Wash me clean of my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be proved right when You speak and blameless when You judge.
Surely I was brought forth in iniquity; I was sinful when my mother conceived me. Surely You desire truth in the inmost being; You teach me wisdom in the inmost place. Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities.
ASKING FOR A NEW HEART
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence; take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will return to You.
Deliver me from bloodguilt, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; You take no pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
In Your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build up the walls of Jerusalem. Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, in whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on Your altar.
REPENTANCE IS THE ANSWER
David’s repentance in this Psalm was clear, sincere, humble, and detailed. He examined himself and pleaded with God for deliverance.
VERSE: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence; take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will return to You. (Psalm 51:10-19)
PRAYER: Oh Lord, if only it could be that we never need to come to You for the matters of forgiveness and deliverance from sins, but we are the sons of Adam. Graft us into your tree and make us Your sons, sons who live in righteousness and love. Please forgive us Father. Help us to turn. Deliver our children and their children. Please heal our land that we may live according to the purposes You designed for us. Today and always we seek your mercy and grace. For You alone have the power to change our hearts.
