VICTORIES OF DAVID

So far, we have witnessed God being exceedingly faithful to David.  He was granted victory in every thing he attempted to do. Surely David was blessed with the promise of a royal Kingship under a never-ending covenant.  David had also become wealthy through the conquest of God’s enemies.  He always offered this amazing accumulation of wealth to the use of God.  The treasures from the plunder went into the work of the tabernacle.  This was one of the greatest victories of David.  He took no personal credit and gave all glory to God for these victories.

As promised, David’s House Is being firmly established on solid rock.  Over-and-over we see God using David’s skills as a mighty warrior to defeat Israel’s enemies.  Chapter 8 of 2 Samuel lists the many victories of David.  He gave praise to God for each victory.

2 SAMUEL CHAPTER 8

As we begin to understand 2 Samuel 8, let’s slow down a bit. We do not want to skip over the important details of these victorious battles of David.  A short review of each major battle seems to be in order. Later we will see how these details matter.  Some of them are vitally important in understanding the future of God’s people.  Other details matter for the prophetic events leading into the millennial reign of Jesus.  If we aren’t careful, we will miss something we need to remember.

David’s major victories included defeating the Philistines. He then defeated the Moabites. We hear about him defeating Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah. David defeated the Arameans of Damascus, Edom, the Ammonites and Amalek.  Because of David’s leadership under God’s guidance, all of these territories were defeated. Now, in the rule of King David, all of these lands fall before Israel.

A SHORT REVIEW OF DAVID’S VICTORIES

So we want to take a brief pause here. We will take a quick last look at one victory at a time.  We need to go a bit deeper in the unraveling of later revelations in David’s life. Our review will include more of the history of Israel. We will explore some of the major conquests of each battle.

Afterall, these victories changed the world forever.  They are important parts of the fulfillment of God’s plans for mankind.  We want to understand each conquest as we continue to grow in appreciation of David’s dedication and service to God.  The first enemy of God and Isreal defeated by David were the Philistines.

DEFEATING THE PHILISTINES

When the Israelites entered the Promised Land, God commanded them to defeat the Philistines.  It was not until the reign of David that this actually came to completion.  By the might of David, those giants the first group of Israelite spies fearfully retreated from were now destroyed.  With this huge problem out of the way, the success of The Israelite Kingdom became much more abundant.

METHEG AMMAH

Scriptures speak of Metheg Ammah.  Metheg Ammah is just another name for Gath.  Gath was the hometown of Goliath, the Philistine giant David defeated as a young shepherd boy.  At this point of David’s reign over Israel all of Gath is conquered.  It appears the victory over the Philistines is complete.

THE FUTURE HOPE OF THIS DEFEAT

Gath came to be called Golgotha.   One from David’s lineage would come. He was to be crucified on a cross in this land where David slew a Philistine giant.

David slew physical giants.  Jesus slew spiritual giants.  There is need for both. These two from The House of Daivd served well to conquer the land.

SHADOWS OF MESSIAH’S VICTORY

In the days to come, this One from the line of David would become even more victorious than David.  He would rise from the grave, giving everlasting victory over death.

All the victories mankind tried to achieve and failed were accomplished by Jesus on the cross.  We know this King as Our Messiah. He is a descendant of The House of David and The Son of God. One day He will reign as the King of All Kings.  When this happens, the best of God’s promises to David will be fulfilled. It is the promise that One from his house will rule and reign forever and ever.  That promise is still to come.  It is the hope of all believers.

In our next lesson we will cover how David defeated the Moabites.

PRAYER:  Lord we know that David was a shadow and type of Messiah.  Teach us your ways. Please help us to understand Our Beloved Messiah so that we too might shadow His life. We pray that, like David, others might see Him living in us.  Help us to be victorious as David was.  Teach us to win the physical and spiritual victories of every day life on this earth.
