The beginning of Saul’s reign in Israel came about after the fulfillment of three signs for Saul from God.
First, we hear that Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head. Then, Samuel kissed him. Samuel said; “Has not the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance?”

SAUL NEEDS PROOF
Saul was probably stunned.
It must have felt strange to him that he would be chosen by God to be the first King of Israel. Perhaps he was having trouble believing it was true.
Samuel gives Saul three signs which are to serve as confirmation to Saul that he has indeed been chosen by God to be the first King of Israel.
Below we can ponder the three signs for Saul.
ONE OF THREE SIGNS FOR SAUL
The first sign was that Saul would meet two men near Rachel’s tomb at Zelzah (https://www.bibleplaces.com/blog/2010/11/rachels-tomb-bible-vs-tradition/) on the border of Benjamin. The two men would say ‘The donkeys you set out to look for have been found. And now your father has stopped thinking about them and is worried about you. He is asking, “What shall I do about my son?”
Because it is a type of review that covers the above points, I want to share a beautiful sermon here. I heard it after beginning to write this lesson. It seems very relevant to speak to us before moving on: https://www.bing.com/videos/riverview/relatedvideo?q=%27The+donkeys+you+set+out+to+look+for+have+been+found.&mid=F2E9AE168F46C823F57FF2E9AE168F46C823F57F&FORM=VIRE.
NUMBER TWO OF THREE SIGNS FOR SAUL
Next, Samuel instructed Saul to go to the great tree of Tabor.
Once there, Saul would meet three men who were going to worship God at Bethel.
One man would have three goats with him. Another one would be carrying three loaves of bread. The third man would have a skin of wine with him.
They would greet Saul and offer him two loaves of bread, which Saul was told to accept.
NUMBER THREE OF THREE SIGNS FOR SAUL
Next Saul was to go to Gibeah of God, where a Philistine outpost was in existence.
Samuel told Saul he would meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place with lyres, timbrels, pipes and harps being played before them. They would be giving prophecy.
Then Samuel instructed Saul that the Spirit of the LORD would come upon him in a strong way. Saul would also begin to prophecy.
At that time, Saul would be changed into a different person.
Samuel went on to tell Saul that once these things happened to him, Saul would be led by God. Saul was to do whatever God led his hands to do. From that point forward Saul could know that God would be with him.
Afterward, Saul was to go to Gilgal and wait seven days for Samuel to come bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices and fellowship offerings.
SIGNS FULFILLED
The scriptures tell us as Saul left to follow Samuel’s instructions, God changed Saul’s heart.
All of the things that Samuel had told him came to pass and were fulfilled that very day.
WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS MEAN?
These are some profound happenings. The things that happened to Saul on this day are not typical things that happen to men on ordinary days as they go through life. Every single thing was significant in more ways than we can probably see.
Next week we will discuss the further meanings of the story we covered today. I mentioned last week that I did not understand why a lot of times as we go through the bible we see stories hiding within the stories. This week God showed me an answer to that mystery. I can’t wait to share it with you as we discuss the story of Saul further.
