CELEBRATING A PURIM PARTY FOR THE KIDS
It is almost time for Purim! Let’s plan a Purim party for the kids. The IN SEASON Lifestyle’s March Family Tree kit helps us to celebrate Purim in a fun way. We’ve put everything together already. It all is included in our Family Tree For Purim. This year (2025) Purim will occur from sunset on Thursday, March 13th through sunset on Friday, March 14.
By publishing this post we are gently letting you know – it is time to start planning! This is your Purim reminder for March.
PURIM PARTY PLAN
So, we are planning a fun Purim party at our house!
All of our grandkids are invited as well as any other kids in the neighborhood who want to join us. Of course we will let the parents tag along too.
Our March family tree will hold and/or display most of the things we will use at our party. It will be displayed in the kitchen window (as usual.) All the children can congregate around the kitchen table for refreshments. Afterward they will begin to observe and use the things displayed at the tree for our Purim party celebration.
THE STORY
The story of Esther is the most important moment of the whole party. It matters, especially in a Purim party for kids, to know the facts. We have found a wonderful book (displayed under the tree) from which to read the story. This book is called The Queen Who Saved Her People. It is written by Tilda Balsley. You can order it from Amazon. Don’t forget to place your order now before there is not enough time for delivery.
We will write down each character in the story’s name and place it inside a cup. All of the children draw a name. Whoever gets the name for the character’s who have masks on the tree will play that character’s part. If you have extra people, they are the audience. Make sure you include enough pieces of paper which say “audience” in the cup. This eliminates any unfairness when you are picking the cast of the play. Each child who drew a character’s name will take their mask from the tree and use it in the play.
Aren’t these masks cool? You can order them from Amazon.com also. We used the order with the following description for our order:
11 Pcs Purim Masks for Kids Face Costume Masks Decorations for Jewish Party DIY Purim Masks Festival Stick Puppets for Boys and Girls Role Play Cosplay Decor Classroom Game.
PARTICIPANT’S ACTIVITIES
The rest of the children (and all adults attending) will be participating in the audience. Make sure you emphasize how much fun it is to be a part of the audience before you draw parts. You will need to include a part for the narrator. It might be good to pick an adult to do that part. The narrator reads the story. Whenever Esther speaks the audience will clap their hands. When Mordechai speaks they raise one hand and yell “yea!” Whenever the King speaks they stand up and bow and whenever Haman speaks they yell “boo” and stomp their feet.
Just read the book and allow the children to act out the parts. Be encouraging to the audience and help them remember to react.
It will be a fun party!
DOOR PRIZE
The children will vote on the best actor after the play is over. That person will win a beautiful megillah to take home with them. Yes, there are some really pretty megillah’s available at Amazon.com. You pick. One good idea is to give away a copy of the book. You could give away two prizes, one for the best actor, and one for the best participator from the audience.
Another suggestion is to have some masks to color or decorate which portray all of the characters. Amazon has several selections of these, but you could also make up your own designs. The children would enjoy the crafting after the play. They could take their masks home after the party. All would leave happy.
MORE SUGGESTIONS
If you are giving a Purim party for kids it is great to serve Hamantaschen. These tasty cookies with a story are good conversation starters. We have a good recipe. Just click here: https://theinseasonlifestyle.com/hamentaschen/.
Do you want to read our own version of the story of Esther and the King? Just click on this link to find it: http://THE STORY OF ESTHER AND THE KING. This story written by Gail Landgraf is a great version of the beautiful story and it is free. She has also published this story along with many other seasonal stories in a book called GOLDEN TALES FOR RAINY DAYS. This book is also available for sale at Amazon.com.
Sometimes these party suggestions work great for adults as well as children. Here are some photos of our family of mixed ages enjoying the play together.
Hope you have as much fun as we did!
HAPPY PURIM!!!!
